Mark Gatiss directs his real-life husband Ian Hallard in Hallard’s new comedy The Way Old Friend Do – coming to the Criterion Theatre this summer.
Following successful runs on tour and at the Park Theatre, The Way Old Friends Do comes to the West End for a strictly limited season.
Billed as a tender, uplifting, laugh-out-loud new play, a fabulous cast includes Ian Hallard (The Boys in the Band) as Peter, Donna Berlin (Doctors) as Sally, Anton Tweedale (The Mousetrap) as Edward, Sara Crowe (Olivier Award winner for Private Lives) as Mrs Campbell, Andrew Horton (Jupiter’s Legacy) as Christian and Rose Shalloo (Call The Midwife) as Jodie, plus Toby Holloway, Tariye Peterside and Joe Sargent.
The play also features the voices of Miriam Margolyes and Paul O’Grady.
In 1988, two school friends tentatively come out to one another: one as gay, the other – more shockingly – as an ABBA fan. Nearly thirty years later, a chance meeting sets them on a brand-new path and they decide to form the world’s first ABBA tribute band – in drag! But can their friendship survive the tribulations of a life on the road which includes platform boots, fake beards and a distractingly attractive stranger?
This heartfelt story will appeal to anyone who understands how it feels to be a fan: of ABBA or of anyone!
The Way Old Friends Do runs at the Criterion Theatre in London from 17 August 2023 – 9 September 2023.
