Spanish writer Juan Carlos Rubio’s acclaimed play The Island is getting a new revival at Cervantes Theatre this autumn 2023.
Directed by Jessica Lazar, and translated by Tim Gutteridge, The Island centres on Ada and Laura, two parents anxiously waiting for news about their son’s condition after a devastating accident that has left him with severe injuries.
Their son’s mental disability has made their lives a living hell, and the prospect of his death could mean the chance to rebuild what is left of their shattered lives.
But can one truly move on from the death of a child? How far can one endure pain and suffering before breaking?
The Island promises to explore this raw and uncomfortable territory, and the fine line between what we feel and what we’re capable of showing to the world.
The play stars Rebecca Banatvala as Laura and Rebecca Crankshaw as Ada.
The Island is playing at Cervantes Theatre in Southwark, South London, from 28 September to 21 October 2023.
