New Luxury Hotels in London

A number of new luxury hotels have opened in London in the past few years, including the Shangri-La at The Shard.

The 2012 Olympics in London saw over 11,000 new rooms open up in the Capital to accommodate the influx of visitors. London’s hotel scene has settled down a bit since then, but post-Olympics there’s still a number of new openings to get excited about.

Here we take a quick look at new luxury hotels that have recently opened in London, some new additions from the last few months, and what’s on the horizon.

NEW HOTELS NOW OPEN

Shangri-La Hotel at The Shard

Luxury hotel group Shangri-La has (finally – after much delay) opened its first London hotel in May, on the 34th to 52nd floors of Renzo Piano’s iconic Shard building. There’s all of the comfort and elegance you would expect from the 202 guestrooms and suites, plus an infinity pool on level 52, and Signature restaurant TĪNG on level 35. Oh, and extraordinary views of London!

Ham Yard Hotel

The latest edition to the Firmdale Hotels empire sits nicely alongside their West End sister hotels the Charlotte Street Hotel, Soho Hotel, Haymarket Hotel and Covent Garden Hotel. Slap-bang in the middle of Soho (their websites says that it’s “moments from Mayfair” but this is the heart of Gay Soho), Ham Yard features 91 well-sized rooms and suites with floor-to-ceiling windows, and facilities including a tree-filled garden, drawing room and library, spa and gym, and a Fifties style bowling alley. A rooftop garden offers some great views of Soho.

Mondrian London

The Mondrian London is the latest hotel by ultra-cool Morgans Hotel Group, joining the Sanderson and St Martin’s Lane in London. The hotel opened after a massive restoration of the Sea Containers building on the South Bank, designed by Design Research Studio’s Tom Dixon. This is the first Mondrian hotel in Europe so the pressure has been on to ensure that it is hip and fabulous. Sea Containers was originally built as a luxury hotel but has remained as offices until now. The hotel’s design takes inspiration from the cruise liner-inspired building, with a giant, external and internal copper clad wall like the hull of a ship running into the foyer. The huge 1,500 m2 ground floor includes two river-side restaurants, and a roof-top bar overlooking the Thames, a Morgans Agua spa and a screening room run by Curzon compliments the facilities for the 360 bedrooms.

Rosewood London

Opened: October 2013
The Rosewood London has made an immediate impact on London’s hotel scene. The building itself is extremely grand, occupying a neoclassical landmark on High Holborn that was built in 1914. Money has been lavished on this hotel – and thankfully it shows.
