Michelin has announced its guide to London restaurants awarded Michelin stars for 2018.
The 2018 Michelin restaurant guide is out, awarding new stars to London restaurants, and a few establishments losing a star or two.
Six London restaurants have been awarded one star for the first time, with one new two star restaurant, and also one new three star restaurant.
Who’s counting (we are!), but that means London hangs on to its total of 70 Michelin star restaurants (58 one Michelin starred, 9 two Michelin starred and 3 with an impressive three Michelin stars).
The big winners for this year’s London dining hot spots include Veeraswamy, London’s oldest Indian restaurant, and The Ritz – both winning one star. Other new one-star venues include Céleste at The Lanesborough in Knightsbridge, The Ninth in Fitzrovia, Ellory in Hackney, Pidgin in Hackney, The Five Fields in Chelsea and Trinity in Clapham.
Also in London, Claude Bosi at Bibendum gained two Michelin stars for his sophisticated French cuisine. A. Wong received one star for its contemporary Cantonese cooking, while Anne-Sophie Pic has a Michelin star for her French cuisine at La Dame de Pic. Phil Howard recescooped a star for Elystan Street, and Aquavit for its traditional Nordic dishes. Two Indian restaurants in London are also on this year’s list of one-star winners: Jamavar and the re-opened Vineet Bhatia.
Gordon Ramsay’s Restaurant Gordon Ramsay on Royal Hospital Road kept its three-stars, and Ramsey’s former head chef of the venue, Clare Smyth, scooped the Female Chef Award – even before her new restaurant opens in Notting Hill.
The Araki in Mayfair took three stars for the first time. With its nine-seater counter, The Araki was established by Mitsuhiro Araki when he moved to London from Tokyo in 2014, and was quoted as being “simply sublime” by the guide.
There is also a new London list for the Michelin Bib Gourmands awards, which provide good food and good value for money. 15 awards were handed out to Charlotte’s W5 in Ealing, Legs in Hackney, The Barbary in Covent Garden, The Marksman in Hackney, Primeur in Highbury, Upstairs at Trinity in Clapham, Bellanger in Islington, Padella in London Bridge, Gunpowder in Spitalfields, Foley’s in Fitzrovia, Paradise Garage in Bethnal Green, The Newman Arms in Fitzrovia, and Soho crowd-pleasers Bao, Hoppers and Vico.
