The original Tate gallery, and arguably still the best – in terms of art, and the fact that since Tate Modern opened further down the river, the vast and splendid galleries are much quieter.
Free to enter, with some special exhibitions charging entry and ticketed, if you are visiting a number of exhibitions across both the Tate and Tate Modern on your trip, it’s worth investigating membership.
Tate Britain opened in 1897 and is one of the largest museums in the UK. It houses a massive collection of UK art, from Tudor times onwards, and has a large collection of the works of J. M. W. Turner, who bequeathed all his own collection to the nation.
Tate Britain is home of the annual – and excitingly controversial – Turner Prize exhibition, which features four artists selected by a jury chaired by the director of Tate Britain. The selection goes on through the year, with the four nominees announced in May, a show of their work starting in October, and the prize awarded in December.
Their ongoing, free exhibition British Art 1540–1930, exploring over 300 years of British art, is a brilliant place to start.
